A New Enterprise for MHF

Article Written by Claudia Guarnaccia

The Michael Hughes Foundation has recently been certified with Social Traders. This is a proud achievement and milestone in our Foundation’s history but what does it exactly mean?

Social enterprises by definition “are businesses that trade to intentionally tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people with access to employment and training, or help the environment” (Extract: Social Traders).

Our Foundation falls under the community category and is actively trying to improve the coordinated response to cardiac arrest – with an ultimate goal to help save more lives.

To become certified with Social Traders, an organisation must demonstrate:

  • A clear mission or purpose
  • A business plan and long term strategy
  • Financial sustainability
  • That trade is more than 50% of the company’s overall revenue
  • How the organisation is making a difference!

The key benefits of certification will allow our Foundation to market our organisation to Corporate and Government procurement buyers and also provides an additional level of credibility and support for the growth of the Foundation into the future.

Our Foundation is built on the sole purpose to create change with how we, as a community, respond to cardiac arrest. It is our mission to support communities through education, providing resources and improving the required knowledge, skills and confidence to act. Any effort helps to reduce time delays to support a victim of cardiac arrest, increases the effectiveness of medical professionals (eg paramedics and cardiologists) and directly impacts on a person’s quality of life post an event.

We achieve this by constantly focussing on the Cardiac Chain of Survival and Heartsafe Community frameworks in a bid to ‘Turn Bystanders into First Responders’. Technology such at the GoodSAM app and our strong relationships with key industry and sector partners allows us to have a meaningful reach across communities locally in Western Sydney and across New South Wales.

Since our inception in 2015, our team has worked extremely hard in our endeavours and have achieved many significant milestones. These are highlighted in the following images:

To ensure longevity and sustainability, The Michael Hughes Foundation is continually evolving and growing to be a significant contributor to cardiac arrest in our State and ensuring our business model is always focused on people and the communities they represent.

It is a great honour to become certified with Social Traders, one that we all here at Michael Hughes Foundation are very proud of!

The Whittley Club of NSW Inc obtained a defibrillator through NSW Office of Sport grant program.  The assistance I received from Julie and the organisation was fantastic!  MHF helped guide me through the necessary paperwork and provided our members with thorough training in the use of the equipment.

Our CPR refresher course was great, and Kevin is just awesome! I don’t think we would want anyone else but Kevin from now on, we feel spoilt!

- Baber Rasheed, Community First Step, Fairfield

I just completed my HLTAID003 Provide First Aid course. It was the best first aid training I have ever done. Charnan is a fantastic trainer with such a wealth of experience.

- Karen Hope, General Manager People, Culture and Youth Programs, PCYC NSW

Since 2016, Stellar Learning has used Michael Hughes Foundation for all our first aid training. Our trainer Kevin is amazing… Not only does he do First Aid courses, he is a paramedic and very hands on. Kevin explains things in an easy manner and helps everyone throughout the course. I would recommend him and the Foundation to any business wanting to host a first aid course.

- Liv Taylor, Stellar Learning Group

Thank you MHF! Your first aid and CPR training were fantastic. We love your presenters because they always make the training so interesting for our staff by sharing real life knowledge and experience. Keep up the great work.
